Arts & Culture

Kronendal has a vibrant and inclusive Arts & Culture environment for all learners from Grade 1 to 7.

In addition to our bi-annual music evenings, we celebrate various religious days by educating our learners on the significance and history of festivals, including:

  • Christmas
  • Diwali (Hindu festival of lights)
  • Eid-al-Fitr (Islamic festival of breaking the fast)
  • Heritage Day
  • Chinese New Year

Music

Our Music Department was established to provide learners with an
environment where musical talent could be developed, nurtured and celebrated.

We follow the CAPS curriculum in a new and innovative way in which learners are encouraged to find their niche. We understand that
not all learners will become young Beethovens, but believe that all children have the ability to enjoy sound, music, music history, and play an instrument to some degree.

In the Foundation Phase, we expose students to the concept of sound, rhythm, instruments, movement, and terminology, with a focus on body percussion, locomotive and non-locomotor movement, as well as basic recorder playing.

By Grade 3 children are able to read music, translate the varying factors, and play all at the same time, which is a brilliant skill to have.

In the Intermediate Phase we delve into music history, genre, composers, and the evolution of music as a whole, while also more focussed projects around building instruments, creating graphic scores, and combining other art forms with music. By integrating dance, art, and instrumentation, students are able to find the areas that they feel stronger in.

Our Senior Phase is where a lot more attention is paid to scales, time signatures, notation, precise terminology, and learning about specific composers and their contributions.

Our music department is a fun, active and creative space with impactful class work, projects, and assessments.

Enviro Club

Our Enviro Club passionately fosters environmental awareness and a community feeling of responsibility around nature. We meet weekly and learn about sustainable practices, as well as maintain and grow our own organic fruit and vegetables on the school’s property.

Each and every term we plan an exciting outing, such as a hike, a food garden visit, or even a tour of a waste recycling plant, which further supports the environmentally-friendly three-bin system we have in place throughout the school.

Chess Club

At Kronendal, learning to play chess offers numerous cognitive benefits for our children aged 9-13. It enhances critical thinking skills as children must plan ahead, consider various possibilities, and make strategic decisions. This process of evaluating different outcomes and learning from mistakes sharpens their problem-solving abilities, which are crucial for academic success and everyday life.

Chess also significantly boosts concentration and patience. The game requires sustained attention and focus, teaching children to remain attentive and calm under pressure. These skills are transferable to other areas of their education, helping them perform better in tasks that require prolonged mental effort and diligence. Chess is also just great fun!
